I now have a greater understanding of the legislation behind the SEND provision we have today. It has enabled me to systematically evaluate and review all the elements of our SEND provision in school. My work with Pupil A I worked directly with a pupil with MLD in an all-girls comprehensive school in the West Midlands and built on this concept of differentiation.
I started the process observing her in English classes with a view to delivering one-to-one intervention within a whole-class setting.
I made three targets for pupil A: I used the same learning outcomes as the class teacher and adapted the resources or created my own to provide that extra layer of support for pupil A.
Outcomes The writing was the simplest target for pupil A to achieve. I tested her on these spellings and monitored her work from that point. Progress was made, as she even began to correct capitalisation mistakes herself.
The other two targets were more difficult to meet and progress cannot truly be measured due to my limited time working with pupil A. In terms of her oral participation, I found that pupil A could only give extended answers in class when we had thoroughly prepared an answer in advance and she had written it down in a manner she could understand.
Similarly, her avoidance is going to continue as long as she gets lost in the subject matter.
